BetterSTR’s official page says its core guidebook is free for unlimited properties, guides and guests. QR sharing, analytics, house rules and integrations are listed in that core. Optional charges include $2.99/property/month or $0.50/reservation for Premium, $0.10 per SMS, $2 per translated language, custom domains, devices and verification. Upsells carry a 7% platform fee without Premium or 3% with Premium. Its Wi-Fi email-capture product is optional; it is inaccurate to say the free guidebook requires guests to surrender an email address.
Example 2: one free guide, then paid tiers
Hostfully offers one guidebook at $0. Its pricing page lists sponsored recommendations on the Free plan; Pro adds revenue features, custom branding, bulk editing and translations to 16+ languages, while Enterprise targets 200+ guidebooks. The public page reviewed did not display the Pro amount, so a serious cost comparison requires a current quote rather than an invented number.

- The exact free scope: properties, branding, languages, private content, exports and support.
- Optional economics: monthly upgrades, per-reservation charges, SMS, translation and transaction fees.
- Guest data: what is collected, for which feature, on what legal basis and whether the host controls consent and exports.
- Exit plan: content export, URL continuity and the work required to replace printed QR codes if you migrate.
- Guest experience: open a real example on a slow phone and judge the branding, navigation and accessibility yourself.
